Thank you dad for all the wonderful memories of working side by side with you learning how to make, bake and decorate.
The bakery experience started the year I was born 1968. My grandfather came out of the Army as a baker and purchased Cramer’s Bakery in 1968. Along my grandfather’s side was two of his three sons. My father James and his brother George went to work for my grandfather.
Cramer’s Bakery was known for various items, first and foremost everything was made from scratch and baked fresh daily. We had items flying out the showcase. Most of the time customers would line up to purchase the item before it was placed in the showcase. I remember people grabbing a number out of a 200 hundred series to go shopping in the shopping center to return for their baked goods.
When I was a youngster, I had to go to work with my dad while my mom was in the hospital with my youngest sister. I remember playing with all the cake decorating items and watching everyone work. When I became exhausted I located 50# bags of flour, sugar, etc. to sleep on. I’d cover myself with aprons to keep warm. Then my dad would wake me to help myself to fresh baked goods, then to head home around six in the morning. During the summer months it would become very hot and I’d walk into our walk in freezer to cool off. I spent many days, months and years watching my middle sister and youngest sister at the bakery, we’d clean the store front, fold boxes, and get cake boards ready for cakes. I soon became of age to work, so I started working at the bakery part-time then to working full-time.
My dad showed me how to make danish, cookies, coffee cake, beehives, cinnamon nut bread, round nut bread, pull aparts, butterflake rolls, bisquits, scones, pies, turnovers, cupcakes, stolen, whip cream items: cream puffs, fruit basket cakes, éclairs, coconut cream pies, chocolate cream pies, Neapolitans, snow shoes, various cakes, Italian rum cakes, etc.
My dad worked very hard, he never called in sick and worked from 6pm till 6am six days a week. Shortly after my grandfather passing we departed from his brother and opened a bakery in the Rosemont area in 1990, where I was attacked during the night. Upon closing that location my dad went to work at Safeway and then to Raley’s bakery. In the meantime, I’ve pursued other employment. I miss the times we worked side by side listening to music and having a great time!
My dad passed away a few years ago, and since then my high school sweetheart has called me “The Baker’s Daughter” so on that note... I’ve opened a business for all ages to join in the fun of making, baking and decorating. I never was told you’re too young to be a baker! I’m here to pass on my passion to all of the children out there! My daughter has expressed interest in being the next baker’s daughter. I guess my son will take a part in protecting our country.
